Social Networking for Libraries

I found a blog post this week called Ten Social Networking Tips for Libraries. Nothing real new here but good things to keep in mind.

More Links

I was trying out cuil (which I saw on Lynette's post) and found Libworm. Has anyone used this? According to the website:

What is LibWorm?
LibWorm is intended to be a search engine, a professional development tool, and a current awareness tool for people who work in libraries or care about libraries.

How does LibWorm work?
LibWorm collects updates from about 1400 RSS feeds (and growing). The contents of these feeds are then available for searching, and search results can themselves be output as an RSS feed that the user can subscribe to either in his/her favourite aggregator or in LibWorm's built-in aggregator.

Looking at LibWorm's website led me to The Blogging Libraries Wiki which might be fun to look at. I've decided these projects are like the song that never ends one thing leads to another and to another....

Bloglines

I saw an interesting article from USA Today on libraries while browsing my bloglines account. It is about public libraries, but what interested me is that it was talking about how libraries are keeping up with the digital age. It seems so odd to me that this is news to people.

Google Docs

Has anyone played with Google docs yet? I did some uploading of documents that I wanted to have access to at home, but I had to save them as an older version of office first.

Library Thing

This is the one I have most been looking forward to. I just started playing with Library Thing today. I know I keep saying this, but this is definitely my favorite thing. So much fun, useful. and easy to use. Especially, for me since I have books in boxes. Once I get them all added to my library thing account, it will be so helpful to know whether or not to keep searching for something I think I have. If I had internet access from my phone, I think it would be so helpful to access my collection while out book shopping. Click here to access my list (short as it is so far.)

Play week 2

I used a logo generator to make a new title.

PLAY WEEK

I love this! Click here for a website that has various comic covers where you can fill in the word bubbles. In case you can't read the words on the cartoon, it says, "So how do I work this newfangled technology??? How is a superhero suppose to keep up with it all."

RSS feeds

I've edited this post 3 times!!! I've set up my bloglines account. When I tried to put the link in, first I didn't have the user name set then I put it in but the link went to someone else's list. I think I have it right this time. Please try this link and let me know if it works. Thanks.

It also looks like you can have the bloglines list show in your blog, but I haven't figured that out yet.

The one thing I did figure out is how to find drafts. I found two under edit posts that I thought I had lost.

Uses of technology

Technology post

The last part of this weeks assignment was to blog about anything in technology. I followed links to sitepal.com and oddcast.com (apparently from the same company). I would recommend watching the intro movie on www.sitepal.com. This could be a lot of fun. Maybe we could use it for some of our promotional ideas for the library. I think it could be one more way to show students that we are keeping current with technology.

Flickr 2

Hi - The second part of this week's assignment was to explore some of the tools you can use with Flickr, but there seemed to be so many things you can do that I was overwhelmed and didn't quite know where to start. I found several links to Spell with Flickr that didn't go anywhere. I think I will need to spend more time on this later.

Flickr week

This is my second try at this week's post. Somehow I lost my original trying to put the link in. Oh well, more practice is good, right?
I had never seen Flickr before - very interesting. I really like that you can put comments on specific spots on the pictures. If you follow this link you can see a beautiful castle with comments in several spots:

Blog article

I found an interesting article linked from a blog Christa shared with me. The article reviews a lot of popular blogs.

Experiment

For my next dazzling (and nearly death-defying) feat, I will attempt to send a post via email.  Stand back everyone J

Settings

Please comment. I think I've set my settings to review comments before they are published, but I would like to check. So, here's a question to answer: of the list of 23 things, which are you most looking forward to?

Blog elements

Hi,
I've added a picture and a quote today. That was fairly easy. It seems there are so many options, I don't know what to try next. Any suggestions?

Lifelong Learning

Watching a video about lifelong learning, the item I find the easiest is step 5 - Create your own learning tool box. I love searching out resources. Unfortunately, I tend to spend too much time finding information and not enough time using the information. Even today, as I was creating a big list of resources about library careers, I just kept following links instead of reading the information I had found.

The step I find the most difficult is step 6 - Use technology to your advantage. The problem I have with this step is that I get easily frustrated and feel helpless when I can't make the technology do what I think it should. Even if new technology might make something easier, I tend to do things the way that I already know if I think the learning curve is too steep. That's why I chose the title of this blog - I'm Getting Up To Speed which takes GUTS :)

Big Day

This is my very first blog & post. Yeah me!!! It's been a big day for me 2.0 wise. I looked up a bunch of websites on library careers and made a del.icio.us list. Now, I'm working on my blog. This could get addicting.
